Singer-songwriter Beatie Wolfe is redefining music’s role in the digital age. Blending storytelling, creative technology, and ritual, Wolfe has pioneered projects like the world’s first 3D interactive album app, an NFC-enabled card deck, and a “musical jacket” woven with the sonic DNA of her songs. In this episode, she explores how these innovations reconnect listeners to the tactile, immersive experience of music, and shares powerful research on music’s ability to spark memory and communication in people living with dementia.
Reimagining the Album for the 21st Century
For Wolfe, music has always been as much about how it is experienced as what it sounds like. Her early love of vinyl records inspired her to create modern equivalents—digital formats with liner notes, artwork, and ceremony built in. Her debut album in 2013 launched as a vinyl, a lyric book, and a “digital vinyl” app that transformed a phone into a mini theatre for immersive listening.
When Music Meets Memory
Wolfe’s fascination with music’s deeper impact led to a research project with the Utley Foundation, care organizations, and 20/20 Research, exploring how her original songs could engage people with dementia. Performances across UK care homes revealed striking results—72% improvement in memory and communication—and deeply personal moments of reconnection, even with songs residents had never heard before.
The Musical Jacket and Creative Technology
Her “musical jacket,” created in collaboration with legendary tailor Mr. Fish, turns music into wearable art. Embedded with lyrical and sonic elements, the jacket has been exhibited internationally and serves as a tangible expression of Wolfe’s mission: to merge physical craft and digital possibility into experiences that spark imagination and presence.
