Music Discovery with Jason Kramer: Radio Curation, Emerging Artists, and Audience Connection

Season 2 · Episode 10

Nov. 20, 2023

KCRW DJ and veteran music curator Jason Kramer shares his perspective on music discovery in a digital-first world. In this conversation, Kramer discusses the instinct and human connection that guide his curation, the role of radio in championing emerging artists, and how tastemakers can thrive alongside algorithms. Listeners will gain insight into what keeps music discovery vibrant, personal, and deeply engaging.

Rethinking Music Discovery in the Digital Age

Jason Kramer explains how the art of music discovery has shifted with the rise of streaming and social media. While algorithms suggest music based on patterns, Kramer emphasizes the irreplaceable role of human curators who bring cultural context, emotional resonance, and unexpected finds to listeners.

Championing Emerging Artists

From his years at KCRW, Kramer has introduced countless new voices to the airwaves. He discusses the importance of trusting one’s ear, staying open to fresh sounds, and taking risks on music that might not fit current trends. His stories reveal how a single radio play can launch an artist’s career.

The Enduring Magic of Live Radio

Kramer reflects on live radio as a community space where shared moments happen in real time. The unpredictability and intimacy of live broadcasting create connections that on-demand platforms can’t replicate, fostering loyalty and a deeper relationship between audience and music.

Hear Jason Kramer’s full conversation for a rare look into the instincts, choices, and stories that shape one of today’s most trusted music curators.

Highlights:

  • “There’s a difference between hearing music and truly listening.”

  • “Radio still has the power to break a song in a single play.”

  • “It’s about trusting your ear, not the algorithm.”

Bio

For the last 20 years, Jason Kramer has been in the field of music and radio. Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Kramer worked as an EMT during the late 80s and early 90s; and through the 1992 Los Angeles riots. After changing his career as a medic in the hard streets of LA for ten years, he decided to work in radio starting in 1992 on KLOS, screening calls for the widely popular “Seventh Day.” From that point on, Jason realized that music and radio were his calling.

During his transition, he started off with a stint working with SoCal favorites Sublime and their label Skunk Records. In 1996, he moved on to Fox Sports TV as their full-time music supervisor for 6 years, leading him to become a show producer on Fox Sports Radio. He has also worked in various other aspects of music including management, radio DJ, publishing, creative consulting, music photography, education, and as a music supervisor.

Jason started off as a KCRW volunteer in the mid-90s and has been on air since 1997 during a show called The Lab. You can hear Jason on his weekly show on Sunday nights on KCRW and KCRW.com, and can be found playing himself on several films and TV shows in the past few years.
